I am Athanasia Houvarda, and I am a fatal car crash burn survivor from Greece. In Greek my name means immortality and of course I don't think I am immortal, I am not even sure if I wish to be, but in 2001 I beat the odds and watched my life change in one split second.I was severely injured with 3rd and 4th degree burns on 74% of my body. But on that day, I lost a lot more than my healthy skin, I lost my friends, I lost my identity, I lost my marriage and my business and my whole world was shattered into pieces. But what happens after the impact?

On this episode I will be discussing with a very close friend and guest of this podcast about the impact of a single car accident on 67 families, their friends and their community.

33 years ago the most severe accident happen in the history of US that was caused by a drunk driver.

Out of the 67 people on a school bus, only 40 survived and many of them, severely injured.
My guest today is one of the survivors, her name is Carey Cummins and I had the honor to meet her on my first World Burn Congress in Anaheim in 2014. Since then , I am fortunate to call her my friend.
She will be taking us through her experience of surviving a horrific and extremely traumatic experience. To learn more you can also watch a documentary called "IMPACT, after the crash" that she was co-producer.
